This marketing tactic seemed viable as we all know controversy means more publicity.

Publicity Stunt?

Call of Duty series developer and former head of Sledgehammer Games, Michael Condrey, has seemed to suggest that Activision is pushing Infinity Ward to take the path of controversy in making the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. This marketing tactic seemed viable as we all know controversy means more publicity.

In an interview with VentureBeat, when questioned about reports that the game is disturbing, Condrey quoted “I maintain that video games are the most important art form of our time. I respect every developer who strives to deliver their work as an extension or reflection of their artistic vision. That said, MW seems like a tough challenge for any studio, especially if they are being pushed by publishing to be more controversial and ‘darker’ for the sake of headlines”.

Creativity VS Marketing

Now, as you may already know, this is not consistent with what Infinity Ward has previously stated about the game. The gaming studio has noted on more than one occasion that the game is its 100 percent creative vision. With that into consideration, it is doubtful that Infinity Ward will put Activision under fire, so it is plausible that it will never reveal whether such pressure is being applied by the publisher.

It is also true that Condrey is a bit unclear about his remarks. Obviously, he is suggesting that acting controversial is the approach Activision have adopted for the sake of making the headlines. However, we are not sure whether his comments came from an assumption on his part, or some inside scoop that he knows.

Going Strong

Whatever the case may be, the controversy and the all-out eye-catching headlines have been excellent marketing approach for the game. The Call of Duty franchise has been a beloved tradition for years now, and with the hype that is going on for this newest installment, it is not surprising that fans have been clamoring for more updates.
