Mere hours ago, Blizzard announced that Overwatch is going to host a double XP event running from June 8th through June 12th. It will be available across all platforms and enables Overwatch players to earn twice as many loot boxes during their gameplay on PS4, PC and Xbox One.

The Double XP weekend is the icing on the cake that concludes the Anniversary event commemorating the first year of Overwatch release. Apart from the loot boxes, players are also given the chance to get the precious legendary skins.

The Anniversary event kicked off on May 23rd and offered more than 100 cosmetic items. However, Blizzard faced a barrage of criticism as players considered it utterly expensive to obtain the Anniversary items. Their displeasure made Jeff Kaplan, the Overwatch director, try to remedy the situation by acknowledging their complaints and promising changes in the loot box system.

Blizzard representatives announced that the double experience multiplier was applicable to almost all sources of in-game XP. More precisely, it includes earning medals, completing a match, backfilling a match in progress, completing consecutive matches, and time spent in a match.

However, it is important to note that players’ gain from the first win of the day remains at 1,500 XP. The double XP weekend starts at 5.pm on June 8th and concludes at 11:59 pm PDT on June 12th. This is the way Blizzard chose to say “Thank you” for players’ enthusiasm and support.

As for the other Overwatch-related news, Blizzard has recently published a post, hinting at a new Lunar map and a new hero arrival. Currently, the assault map is playable on the PC public test realm servers. Blizzard representatives remain tight-lipped as to which is the console release date.

Although Jeff Kaplan has recently announced that Overwatch hero release was to be slowed down after the Doomfist update, new hero details leaked. According to players, this is Hammond, a chimpanzee with cybernetic enhancements.

Hammond will be a support hero and his abilities will ideally include placing anchor points that form a barrier and placing a stun beacon. The barrier drops after taking too much damage. However, it comes back unless the anchor point is destroyed.
