Streamer DrLupo Raises Nearly $1M In A Four-Hour Charity Stream

The GuardianCon has come a long way. A few years ago, it was just a small Destiny con. Now it has transformed into an all-weekend show held in July in Orlando. Aside from being an event for gamers and enthusiasts alike, it also runs a week-long charity stream. And this year may be its biggest year yet, as it raised over $3 million for a children’s hospital in Memphis.

GuardianCon For A Cause

The GuardianCon has come a long way. A few years ago, it was just a small Destiny con. Now it has transformed into an all-weekend show held in July in Orlando. Aside from being an event for gamers and enthusiasts alike, it also runs a week-long charity stream. And this year may be its biggest year yet, as it raised over $3 million for a children’s hospital in Memphis.

Big Bucks For Kids

According to a report from Forbes, the stream operated in four-hour blocks, along with streamers, teams, and even private companies joining the cause.

Bungie, Inc. is an American video game developer based in Bellevue, Washington. It raised $400,000 in their four hours. Though the numbers were impressive, the big chunk came in during Ben “DrLupo” Lupo’s turn playing Fortnite, when over $920,000 was donated.

The amount came pouring from his fellow streamers like Ninja. Even the private company State Farm Insurance donated $10,000. All proceeds will go directly to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Viewers of the stream were encouraged to donate with stretch goals built into each stream.

Gamers Unite

To make the streams a real event for a cause, Bungie, for example, showed off some of Destiny 2’s new weapons, while DrLupo played with some self-imposed handicaps, like not being able to build in Fortnite and dropping weapons.

The course of the stream was awe-inspiring as a ton of patrons has shown their support for the cause. During the end of the stream, donations amounting to $20,000-$40,000 from anonymous wealthy patrons have flooded in.

GuardianCon’s charity stream had hoped to raise $3 million, but due to everyone’s support and generosity, the whole affair has amassed a total of $3,721,097. Things like this will make you proud to be part of the gaming community.
