eSports could become an official medal sport at the Olympic Games 2024. That is what the Paris bid committee co-president has revealed. Tony Estanguet confirmed that he would discuss the matter with the members of the International Olympic Committee and eSports may become a full-fledged sport at the Olympic Games that will take place in France in 2024.

In a recent interview, Mr Estanguet said that the young generation had a keen interest in competitive video gaming. Therefore, esports inclusion in the Olympics should be seen as a chance for engaging the younger generation and figuring out why video games are so incredibly popular.

Next month the International Olympics Committee will have a meeting in Peru and Paris will be confirmed as the 2024 Olympics host city. Los Angeles will host the 2028 Games.

Back in April, the Olympic Council of Asia announced that esports would be a medal sport at the Asian Games event that will take place in China in 2022. According to OCA representatives, esports are extremely popular among the youth and their inclusion in the Games is the first serious attempt towards granting them the recognition they deserve.

The Asian Games is the second largest multi-sport event on a global scale. It is yet to be announced which games will be contested during the competition, but the OCA members have already confirmed the titles for the AIMAG event that will be held in Turkmenistan – FIFA 2017, MOBA and RTA gaming types, respectively.

However, an eventual recognition of the esports as an Olympic sport is expected to cause unrest among sports communities. If esports are given an official status as a sport, video game players should be called athletes.

To turn into reality, the idea for an inclusion of the esports in the Olympics should be supported by Thomas Bach, the President of IOC. However, Mr Bach sounded quite hesitant when asked to comment on the matter.

He said that it was still uncertain whether the esports was actually a sport and before making a final decision authorities had to discuss the physical activity they involve as well as the additional factors that could lead to esports inclusion in the Olympics.

The Olympic programme for the 2024 event is to start taking shape after the Summer Olympics in 2020.  Until then, the esports industry has plenty of time to demonstrate that it is worthy of being considered as a medal event at the 2024 Games.
