Back in the distant 2013, Fallout fans first heard about the ambitious New Vegas mod Project Brazil. Apparently, it has been under development for quite some time but according to an update from the Project Leader Brandan Lee, its release is not too far away.

In the update, posted on ModDB, Lee confirms that the Project Brazil, which was supposed to bring a standalone prequel campaign for Fallout: New Vegas, is now called New California. The mod was expected to diversify the gameplay by bringing a Fallout 3-sized map with a new Vault as well as “5000 lines of professional-quality dialog”.

Fallout: New California follows the adventures of the “kid from Vault 18” – an adopted resident of Vault 18 who takes the fateful decision to embark on a journey through the wastelands of the Cajon Pass.

Brendan Lee defined the New California as a “superior name” for the mod. He has drawn several solid arguments in support of the name change: “It’s opening shot is of California, the intro is all about California, we say California several times in the narration, it’s set in California, within New California Republic territory, about the struggles of New California against California factions that impact the New California Republic in New Vegas.”

The update states that the mod will be released all at once and there will not be any extra downloads or parts. Players will get just a single 6GB package. Lee also revealed that the Alpha version was already being tested by fellow modders. The Project Leader expressed his hopes that they would assist with the addition of map upgrades, bug patches, as well as static art, creatures, gear, and guns. Lee confirmed that the release date will be specified once members of the development team complete the MQ05 and add new weather and missile launch effects. Expectations are that the mod will be launched by the end of the year.

Stay tuned for future updates.
