The renowned club G2 Esports announced that it has attracted a number of prominent investors, including André Gomes, the FC Barcelona midfielder. The other strategic investors that have spotted the great potential of the club are the media company MACRO Ventures, Everblue Management, an investment arm of Eric Mindich (Eton Park Capital Management CEO), and the Go4It Co-Founder Marc Lemann.
G2 representatives remained tight-lipped about the amount of the capital, but the funds will be used for expanding club’s talent infrastructure. G2 will allocate a certain amount for pursuing a better brand recognition.
G2 Esports, previously known as Gamers 2, was founded by the former LoL player Carlos “ocelote” Rodriguez. He commented on the funding round and said that the G2 team was confident that the partnership with such strategic investors would be beneficial for the organization’s growth.
The newest G2 investors come from different backgrounds but André Gomes is the most recognized face. The popular footballer said that he sees a great potential in the esports industry. He did not miss to mention that the vast experience of Carlos Rodriguez and the impressive G2 track record, make the investment a promising one.
G2 Esports was established in 2013 and it has managed to become a leading e-sports organization. The League of Legends’ squad has won three European League Championship Series titles. The Hearthstone, CS:GO, and Rocket League rosters also delivered a number of remarkable performances. The organization has rosters in Vainglory and Super Smash Bros, too.
It seems the e-sports industry has strong supporters in Barca’s camp. Gomes’ former teammate Neymar has declared his ambitions to buy a League of Legends team. Barca’s centreback Pique is working on his own e-sports project.
G2 is among the European LCS teams to apply for the North American counterpart. If approved, the organization will have to contribute the amount of $13 million in buy-in fees to take part in the LA-based event. The other three teams that applied for a NA LCS inclusion are Misfits, Splyce, and Fnatic.
