It turned out the gaming community suffers no shortage of ass-kicking heroines. That is why we have listed the top female video characters, combining both superpowers and charisma in a way achievable by girls only.

Lara Croft – Tomb Raider Franchise

A famous explorer once said that the extraordinary is in what we do, not who we are.

Lara Croft

Lara Croft is the main character of the famous video game franchise Tomb Raider. She has been immensely popular ever since her debut 23 years ago in 1996. A team of the British game company called Core Design is to be held responsible for her creation.

Deemed by fans around the globe to be one of the most influential heroines in video game history, she played her part in the Tomb Raider series, becoming the proud holder of six official Guinness World Records. “Best Selling Video Game Heroine” being among them.

We have witnessed how Lara’s backstory has changed extensively throughout the series in the course of time. Her latest incarnation follows the Lara Croft Survivor timeline. This started with the rebooted Tomb Raider game, which is also featured in the Dark Horse Comics.

No matter the particular version, Lara is steadily presented as a highly intelligent and athletic English archaeologist. Armed with brilliant wits and resourcefulness, she ventures into ancient tombs and dangerous ruins. Lara carries two of the most famous handguns in gaming/movies. A pair of custom Heckler & Koch USP Match with stainless slides. Always draws both from the holsters affixed on her thighs. Those 9mm beauties are equipped with JetFunnels and custom mags for quick reload.
Being an extremely popular heroine in gaming, it was only natural to have her magic spread in new spheres. Then came different media cameos, such as comics and movie adaptations starring the A-list actresses like Angelina Jolie and Alicia Vikander.

Bayonetta – Bayonetta Franchise

Let’s dance, boys!

Bayonetta

Bayonetta, going by the real name Cereza is the main character of the Bayonetta franchise. Member of the mysterious Umbra Witches, she is portrayed as a gorgeous woman with a bewitching silhouette. She is of Umbran and Lumen ancestral descent. That is considered a challenge by both clan’s sacred rules. Bayonetta is therefore considered a black sheep by her fellow Umbra Witches.

One could find a lot of similarities with the Devil May Cry series. It goes as far as some fans dubbing Bayonetta, the female Dante. Despite the close features shared by the two characters, Bayonetta is unique, just like the world she bosses.

Because of her choice of attire and weapons, Bayonetta is primarily perceived as a hot charmer. The high-voltage sexuality is not all there is to her. Beneath all the glamour there is a fascinating character waiting to be discovered. She is decisive and fights for what she believes in. Though Bayonetta is far from being a female role model, her resilience is inspirational and the making of a real femme fatale.

Jesse Faden – Control

Fair warning: this is gonna be weirder than usual.

Jesse Faden

Jesse Faden is the lead female character from the cult favorite Control. This action-adventure game is developed by Remedy Entertainment and published by 505 Games. The game revolves around the Federal Bureau of Control, a secret US Government Agency tasked with containing and investigating a phenomenon that violates the laws of reality.

In the wild turn of events, Jesse is named the FBC’s new Director, and is assigned with defeating the Hiss and regaining control over the Bureau’s headquarters called Oldest House.

Jesse is one of the strongest parautilitarians in all of the Bureau’s history. Little is known about her backstory but devs revealed that she’s had a troubling childhood. They also said that she experienced a cataclysmic event that affected her, her family, and hometown. This event transformed her which in turn launched an extraordinary journey towards the secrets of her past.

2B (YoRHa No.2 Type B) – NieR Automata

Everything that lives is designed to end. We are perpetually trapped…in a never-ending spiral of life and death.

2B

YoRHa No.2 Type B (Battle) or 2B is the protagonist of Route A in the critically acclaimed game called NieR: Automata. She is a YoRHa android designed to battle the machine life forms that have overrun the planet on behalf of the few surviving humans. 2B is a battle android that served the automated YoRHa infantry. Her attire has become iconic in the video game community, especially the way her eyes are obscured beneath her military visor.

2B, though not a human, exhibits human-like characteristics that make her relatable. Despite her cold demeanor, 2B is very kind, cares a great deal for her friends, and fights for what is right. She even shows emotion toward her Pod, which seems just enough to assume it was her pet. This character is sophisticated and is sure to take you through a roller coaster of emotions when you play the game. I will not tell anything else out, as I wouldn’t want to spoil a true experience. Just know that NieR: Automatais is undeniably a masterpiece. For real.

Maxine Caulfield – Life is Strange

I take photos. Of me, the world, everything. It may sound sad, but I have a blast.

Max

Maxine Caulfield, or Max, is the protagonist of Life is Strange. This 18-year-old aspiring photographer has a peculiar ability: she can rewind time and even stop it in its tracks.

Max is a geeky introvert who is a bit self-conscious when it comes to her photography. Instead of taking part in festive action, she would rather observe in silence. Though she might seem aloof at times, she is kind at heart. She is smart, practical and mature for her age. This girl is also brave as she often places herself in harm’s way to protect her beloved ones. Her love for photography is immense and shows a deep appreciation of retro techniques.

Life is Strange is a good game that compliments the heroine. It follows the story of a normal girl with special powers who does everything possible to stay just normal. The story is relatable to realistic scenes and characters. Thanks to the supernatural element you will get a fair share of excitement. All this makes it indeed different from your routine plot. A must-play for gamers looking for a unique adventure.

Senua – Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

Do not mourn the waves, the leaves, and the clouds. Because even in darkness the wonder and the beauty of the world never leaves, it’s always there, waiting to be seen again.

Senua

Senua is a Pict warrior and the main character of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. She is a young woman who has had a troubled life, only to get worse by suffering the attack of severe psychosis. She then finds herself on a journey into Helheim (Underworld), to save the soul of her lover, Dillion.

Senua developed a self-contained and meek personality following years of isolation and abuse. Her journey is harrowing and treacherous. Despite all the lemons life throws at her, she manages to display strong resilience and pushes through to save Dillion. Her determination to press on in this difficult quest stems from the guilt instilled in her making her think she caused Dillion’s murder.

Though not exactly your typical heroine, her imperfections have made her one of the best female characters out there. Her courage to fight off her own demons deserves respect. This warrior does not only wield a fearsome blade but has a strong heart too. Here is a favorite game quote to give you a notion as to why Senua is a true hero.

“The hardest battles are fought in the mind, not with the sword.”

Ada Wong – Resident Evil Franchise

We’re beyond sympathy at this point. We’re beyond humanity.

Ada Wong

Ada Wong is a recurring playable character in the Resident Evil franchise. Though not a hero per se, she has a strong conviction and a headstrong personality. Ada’s past life is unknown. Even her ethnic roots and nationality are unconfirmed. Her birth name is a mystery, and Ada Wong is believed to be just a pseudonym.

Ada was a corporate spy for an unnamed competitor of Umbrella, that is dedicated to procuring all kinds of biological weapons and specimens. As a trained assassin, she was an expert in several weapons and fighting styles. Her motivation for every series is unclear. You will sometimes get a depiction of an enemy at first, and then an ally in the following part.

She became a fan favorite due to her anti-hero tendency and interesting personality. Though mainly designed to be a villain, Ada’s character is more complex and can’t be painted white or black. She also shows interest in Leon S. Kennedy, and even goes as far as helping him on several occasions. Though it was never confirmed there are hints of romantic interest between the two agents, which is very interesting seeing that their personalities and motivations are complete opposites.

Amanda Ripley – Alien Isolation

Take a look around you. We’re all we have. No one is coming to save us. We’re on our own.

Amanda Ripley

Amanda Tei “Amy” Ripley-McClaren is the protagonist of the critically acclaimed survival horror Alien Isolation. This Weyland-Yutani Corporation employee was the daughter of Ellen Ripley, one of the original characters in the series.

In the year 2137, fifteen years after her mother’s disappearance, Amanda joins the search team to locate her mother which leads her to Sevastopol. Sevastopol is a decommissioned trading space station. Onboard the station, she is confronted by a Xenomorph Drone that continues to hunt her around the station.

Unlike the previous game adaptations of the Alien franchise, Alien: Isolation focuses more on stealth and survival horror elements. The game was originally designed to be a third-person, but they decided to go for the first-person experience to intensify game mechanics. Amanda, like her mother, is headstrong and determined to survive. Her wit and courage are reminiscent of the beloved original Alien movies rather than of the action games that followed. This intense game is highlighted by vivid lighting and music, not to mention the creepy atmosphere throughout.

Emily Kaldwin – Dishonored 2

I grew up with this broken skyline, the muted colors and the way the light falls. It’s Dunwall, but it’s not. Have I changed, or does everything just look different when you’re not wearing a crown?

Emily

Emily Drexel Lela Kaldwin I is the rightful heir to the throne of the Isles, and Empress Jessamine Kaldwin’s only child. She is the protagonist of Dishonored 2 but was around since the first game. However, during the first game, she was kidnapped but was soon rescued by Dishonored’s main character Royal Protector Corvo Attano. Following the events of the second game, Emily is crowned as Empress of the Isles. She gets later dethroned during a coup.

Emily’s personality and behavior are heavily influenced by Corvo, who has served as her Royal Protector since before her birth. Emily respects Corvo very much and accepts him as a father figure and role model.

At first, Emily starts as an innocent and spirited ten-year-old child with a very close bond to Corvo. She enjoys playing games with Corvo and shows interest in his work. She even asks him to tell her about sword-fighting. But following her mother’s murder and her kidnapping, Emily’s behavior changes, and she proceeds to become a pragmatic act. Child-like features still find their way to the surface, mainly through her interactions with Corvo and Callista. She is very curious and adventurous, constantly asking questions, picking up elders’ wisdom, and happily exploring the Hound Pits Pub. She is also very perceptive, and smart.

Jessie And Zofia Blazkowicz – Wolfenstein: Youngblood

It is do or die, sis. Just like daddy taught us.

Blazkowicz Twins

Jessie and Zofia Blazkowicz are the twin protagonists in Wolfenstein: Youngblood. Their main goal is to search for their father in Paris, France. The two women are mostly seen wearing their armor and having similar faces. The only notable difference is that Zofia has shorter, blonde hair while Jessie has a slightly longer, brown hair. Also, Zofia is looking more like their father, donning shorter blonde hair like BJ, on the other hand, Jessie looks more like their late grandmother, Zofia.

The twins have never encountered real combat situations, but still, their rigorous and harsh training, under both BJ and Anya, is good enough for them to fend off the Nazis effectively.

Zofia is frequently portrayed as the hot-headed and aggressive one. She is also reckless like her father and prefers to get up close and personal with her targets. Despite showing a rough attitude she is a dreamer and aspires to become a novelist.

Unlike her twin sister, Jessie is level-headed and analytical. She possesses a calmer personality but hates losing the most. She likes to compete with Zofia. She turns to be more hardcore, as she never cringes or shies away when facing extreme violence-packed situations.
