The new Honor system was implemented to North American servers less than a week ago, and its implementation caused a wave of discontent among League of Legends communities. Players requested more ways to recognize their fellow players.

The problem stems from the fact that sometimes, there is more than one MVP to a game. Therefore, players feel that they should be able to give a recognition to more than one player at the end of the game.

Rioter Simurgh commented on the matter and acknowledged the fact that IMO was one of the Honor weaknesses. He confirmed Riot was trying to expand the honor and fix all major issues.

Simurgh also confirmed that the enemy honor would also undergo some improvements. Formerly, the ribbon-based Honor system allowed commendation of enemy players in reward for a stellar in-game performance or behavior. He revealed that Riot was actively seeking ways for improving the honor and covering the use cases of freeform honoring both teammates and opponents.

However, Riot Socrates shared a bit different point of view. He explained that the publisher has opted for the one player limit because making the commendations feel valuable requires the availability of constraints around them. He also added that the option of honoring more than one player at the end of the game would have made it less interesting.

How the LoL Honor System Works?

Currently, the Honor system works in the following manner. The best players are given recognition and they are tied to the in-game drops and rewards. The better a player’s Honor rating is, the more loot boxes they get.

At the end of May, Riot announced that it is about to introduce a new, improved Honor system. The latter was updated on June 29th and it was meant to provide LoL players with a cool option for showing how much they respect their fellow players.

Previously, the honor was shown through the numbers on one’s profile or through badges. However, players considered the logic behind the system a bit far-fetched.

The new system prompts every player to honor a teammate after every game. The honor categories are: Stayed Cool, Great Shotcalling and GG<3. To level up, players have to play matchmade games and win. Special honor loot capsules are available at honor level three. Every player can keep track of his/ her level via their profile, and monitor other players’ honor levels, too.
