After last month’s turmoil over the OpenIV modding tool closure, GTA 5 fans were taken aback by yet another surprising announcement. OpenIV team revealed that the “Liberty City in GTA 5” project was cancelled.

After a huge community backlash, The OpenIV modding tool is now officially functioning and accessible to GTA 5 fans. Developers confirmed that they would continue working on its development as before. However, the Liberty City project will not be included in their imminent development plans.

The Liberty City was intended to recreate the city from GTA 4 into GTA 5. However, the mod was scraped because it contradicts with the modding regulations Rockstar Games imposed last month.

The cease and desist letter Rockstar sent to OpenIV developers caused a massive fans’ outcry. Later on, the affected parties agreed on working in collaboration under certain conditions. Rockstar imposed strict rules regarding the intellectual property issues and the Liberty City project seems to be incompatible with these rules.

OpenIV team published a statement on the matter and expressed its gratitude for the huge fans’ support. OpenIV representatives said that they have never supported GTA Online modding and they were not going to support it in future. They also confirmed that they would continue to comply with the Rockstar modding policy. Consequently, they have to cancel the Liberty City project despite regarding it as a big loss for players.

Despite the not-so-wonderful news about the Liberty City mod cancellation, GTA 5 fans took comfort in the fact that the OpenIV itself is available, to say at least.

The abandoned Liberty City mod was to be released as single-player DLC. It was supposed to exist simultaneously with the GTA 5 Los Santos. Information about its debut was expected in the next few weeks.

Fans are now wondering what would be the project to replace the Liberty City? For the time being, OpenIV developers remain tight-lipped as to whether they will revise their plans.
