Sean Vanaman, a co-founder of Campo Santo, the company, developing Firewatch, announced that the studio would file a takedown against Felix “PewDiePie” Kjellberg. The announcement was made a few hours after the Swedish YouTube megastar used a racial slur while streaming PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
During a recent livestream, PewDiePie called a PUBG player the n-word. The racial remark provoked a massive outcry among game devs and company representatives. Campo Santo Games has already declared its intent to file DMCS takedowns against PewDiePie for the indie game Firewatch as well as all its future products.
Sean Vanaman took the matter to Twitter where PewDiePie faced harsh criticism. Vanaman confirmed that he was going to reach other developers and encourage them to stop doing business with Kjellberg. Vanaman admitted that Campo Santo has some financial benefits because of PewDiePie’s Firewatch coverage and said that this was “something for us [Campo Santo– Ed] to think about”.
This is not the first time when PewDiePie makes inappropriate comments, though. A few months ago, he made a harsh anti-Semitic joke that had some quite negative consequences for him. YouTube Red cancelled his show. Disney also severed all ties with him.
It remains to be seen whether Kjellberg will issue an apology for the n-word incident. It would be excessive to say that he is the only one who uses insulting words while streaming. However, he is among the most influential vloggers right now and his behavior does not serve him well. Although many of his fans expressed their support and defended his spontaneous attitude, it would be a wise for him to watch his language in future.
