Shortly after the announcement that Intel Extreme Masters will no longer host the MOBA during the latest tournament season, Riot Games took over the pro LoL scene. The company released information about the Rift Rivals event – a series of tournaments scheduled to kick off at the beginning of July. The first event is scheduled for July 3rd, and the last one is to take place on July 9th. The idea behind the tournament is to become a semi-world-wide event.

Germany, Chile, Russia, Vietnam and Taiwan will be the host countries. Each event will pair the highest seeded teams of one region against another. That change is a deviation from the traditional league where games between teams from the same region are not unusual.

The formats of the competition will not be identical to one another, but the timing for such an event seems right. The tournaments will be held during the summer split between the Mid Season Invitational and the World Championships.

The battles will be as follows:

  • Oceania vs. Japan and Southeast Asia
  • North America vs. Europe
  • South Korea vs. China and Taiwan
  • Turkey vs. CIS Commonwealth of Independent States
  • Latin America North vs. Latin America South and Brazil

The European participants will be the Unicorns of Love, Fnatic, G2 Esports. They will face the North American representatives Phoenix1, Team SoloMid, Cloud9.

Southeast Asia will send the Ascension Gaming, GIGABYTE Marines, and Mineski. Dire Wolves, Sin Gaming, and Legacy will be Oceania’s contenders, while Rampage, Detonation Gaming, and Unsold Stuff Gaming will represent Japan.

Lyon Gaming and Just Toys Havoks will represent Latin America North. Furious Gaming and Isurus Gaming will be Latin America South teams. Brazil will be represented by the RED Canids and Keyd Stars.

Korean Samsung Galaxy, SK Telecom T1, MVP and KT Rolster will join the tournament as well. Chinese representatives will be Royal Never Give Up, OMG, Edward Gaming and Team WE. LMS teams will be ahq e-Sports Club, Machi, J Team, Flash Wolves.

Team AURORA, 1907 Fenerbahçe Espor, SuperMassive eSports, Oyunfor.CREW will be the Turkish representatives, while CIS will send the M19, Vega Squadron, Virtus.Pro and Vaevictis Esports.

Despite the scarce information, tournaments have already become a hot topic on social networks. Riot faced a barrage of criticism due to the fact that some regions are considered stronger than others. People with knowledge of the matter have already made predictions about the final brackets of the World Championships.

Riot is expected to release details regarding the prize. It is still uncertain whether the prize money will be equal for each tournament or not. The clash of the titans will be a dramatic event and LoL fans take comfort in the fact that it is impossible for the SK Telecom T1 to win all five tournaments.
