Build and Design
Despite its utilitarian looks, the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Pro still gives off premium high-end vibes. Its glossy black plates are cool though somewhat prone to fingerprints – that’s something a good old cleaning cloth can fix.
Similarly to most over-ear headphones on the market, its earcups aren’t exactly breathable. The temperature rises proportionately to the hours of your gaming session. But don’t let that get you down as airing the set out for a while will do the trick. Aside from this small mishap, these are undeniably well-designed gaming headphones.
The microphone is removable and appears to be well-made. I like the fact that all detachable parts of the Elite Atlas are easy to replace, and you can find the parts on the Turtle Beach website.
Headband
One of the most distinct parts of the Elite Atlas is its metal arch. It is more comfortable than it looks. The elastic headband is well-padded, and you can adjust the notch for different sizes.
Ear Cups and Controls
The ear cup cushioning of the headset is soft. The cups are broad and deep, so there is no chance your ears will make contact with the drivers.
If you wear glasses, you will feel right at home with the Turtle Beach’s pads. Aside from being comfortable, they also relieve pressure on the glasses caused by the headphones. That’s thanks to their ProSpecs Glasses Relief System, which essentially gives flexibility in the ear cushion to support eyeglass frames. This feature allows you to lessen the depth of the ear cushion in contact points with your glasses.
Controls are simple: you have a decent mic switch and a volume wheel.
Sound and Performance
Shopping for a gaming headset might take a lot of time, energy, and resources. You can get a ton of bells and whistles with a nice pair of cans today, but audio quality is still the priority.
In terms of gaming audio quality, the Elite Atlas headset is not too far behind the Turtle Beach Stealth 600. Though it is still inferior to the ASTRO A40 TR in terms of gaming immersion, the Elite Atlas is a force to be reckoned with.
Thanks to the two 50mm Nanoclear drivers, these cans are capable of producing a frequency response between 12Hz and 20kHz. While I was playing Resident Evil 6, explosions and environmental cues were given justice thanks to the quality drivers.
The bass is a bit overpowering. I can imagine that this sound profile will only shine in extreme action-packed games, and this was evident in my Call of Duty: World at War play. The firefights, grenades, and noisy battlefields came to life. But when I played dialogue-heavy games like Life is Strange, it felt lacking.
After all, it is in explosive moments when a stereo headset shows its prowess. In other gaming genres, you will notice that bass rules the audio. Even though the mids are still present, the bass is the king with these cans.
The Elite Atlas shines best in action films. For musical experiences, this headset will cherish EDM and bass-heavy music, and not necessarily love songs and ballads.
Microphone
I was surprised by the boom mic quality of the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas. Headsets of this type are usually notorious for bad mics. A trial call through Discord was clear and with satisfactory quality. However, although the mic is sufficient for in-game communication, think twice if you are planning to use it for streaming.
Connectivity
Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Pro is wired, and not supported by the Turtle Beach Audio Hub software and app. As we already said, this is pure gaming audio; no frills, just straightforward gaming peripheral.
This headset comes with a 3.5-foot 1/8″ TRRS audio cable, which is a bit short but can be handy if you use it with your console’s controller. Fortunately, in the box, you will also find a 6.8-foot PC splitter cable. The cable connection that goes into the headset is 1/8″ TRRS.
I have to give credit for the 3.5mm audio connection. The Elite Atlas operates with all kinds of systems. Although Turtle Beach advertises this headset primarily for PC use, it also sounds impressive with PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
Final Verdict
The Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Pro is an all-rounder. Honestly. It could well outlive its long-lasting competitors thanks to its replaceable parts. The headset is versatile as it functions on a wide variety of gaming platforms.
Remember, though, that this is a gaming headset, and Turtle Beach has been very upfront about it. That is why if you plan to use it for non-gaming purposes, there is a probability you might end up disappointed. It is bass-heavy, therefore with all the action, explosions, and ambiance going on in gaming, this pair of cans is very much welcome.
If you are looking for a general-purpose headset for Netflix and music binges, then I suggest you look elsewhere. Should you be after a headset that is mainly intended for gaming purposes, then you couldn’t go awry with the Turtle Beach Elite Atlas Pro.
