Razer Naga Epic Chroma Wireless Review: The MMO Mouse!

Naga is a semi-divine creature, which should mean the Razer Naga Epic Chroma ensures a semi-divine gaming experience? Is that true? Read our review and find out.

12 spells at the tip of your thumb

Right before I started writing this review, I asked myself how many genre-specific mice could I name? Believe it or not, the models that popped into my head were no more than three. That’s why I am pretty excited to introduce one of the epic pieces of gaming merchandise currently in existence – the Razer Naga Epic Chroma. The latter is designed primarily for MMO freaks.

What makes it a gorgeous piece of engineering are its wireless capabilities as well as the lighting options and mind-blowing performance in MMO games. And it has 19 programmable buttons too! I tried my best to outline the significant differences between the Naga Epic Chroma and its predecessors and give you insights about the pros and cons it comes with. Hope you get a better idea if it is a good fit for your gaming arsenal.

Ergonomics and Design

The mouse ships with Classic Grip, Palm Grip, and Claw Grip pads and allows you to adjust it, so that it perfectly fits the shape of your hand. That’s an awesome feature, given the fact that it comes with 12 programmable buttons and they need to be equally easy to reach. The design is adapted to meet MMO players’ expectations which makes the mouse relatively unsuitable for other gaming genres.

Unfortunately, lefties are out of luck. The Epic Chroma is suitable for right-handed MMO warriors only. (I believe it’s time for you guys to spark off a riot and demand more mice for lefties). The scroll wheel is a tilting one, and it has a nice rubber ring with little bumps around so you can smoothly scroll without putting too much pressure. The lack of a high-speed scrolling feature came as a massive disappointment to me, but I guess even the most sophisticated gaming peripherals cannot have all advanced features in the world.

Mouse Body Size

The Naga Epic Chroma’ body feels large enough. Even if you have larger hands, you should not have difficulties using it. However, its design makes it unsuitable for most gaming genres. If you use it for playing a game that is not in the MMO genre, you have either to neglect the unnecessary buttons or remap every skill to your thumb. Personally, I like to keep only the most vital skills at hand, so I got frustrated with the availability of a whole lot of buttons I do not need. Other than that, the Naga Epic Chroma is a great MMO mouse that enables you to keep the most frequently used skills and macroses close at hand.

Apart from WoW, I haven’t mentioned any other game so far, but I did that on purpose. I was unpleasantly surprised to find out that Razer guarantees the in-game configuration works only with the following game selection: WoW, Dota 2, LoL, Diablo 3, Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm, Firefall, World of Tanks, Guild Wars 2, Ragnarok Online 2, Path of Exile, Star Trek Online, Lord of the Rings Online, Eve Online, DC Universe Online, and DnF (Tencent game).

Button Layout

As an MMO fan, you know that the more spells you have instant access to, the better. The Epic Chroma features the incredible number of 19 buttons as well as a 12-button thumb grid. Plus, you have two more so that you can swap between sets of key bindings. I am trying to think of another mouse that possesses these capabilities, and I swear I can’t name such.

Most FPS addicts I talked to consider the availability of 19 buttons overkill. Others say that entrusting one digit with 12 buttons means you are looking for a trouble. Well, I agree to a point. The truth is that the buttons are large enough and the mechanical switches produce distinctive clicks. What makes me a big fan of Razer-branded gaming mice is that the buttons are designed to be super sensitive. Even if I am not an MMO fanatic, I have to admit that it is super convenient to be able to hit the right button at the right time. The mouse utilizes the Omron switches that ensure a great tactile feedback with each actuation you make.

Mouse Responsiveness and Sensor

The mouse is outfitted with an 8200 DPI 4G laser sensor and has a maximum acceleration of 50G. The 1ms response rate in both wired and wireless mode makes the Naga Epic Chroma a top performer. The Inter-Device communication feature allows you to temporarily change the sensitivity with one push of a keyboard button. However, the mouse lacks DPI on the fly, which is a shame for such a seemingly sophisticated gaming peripheral. Still, you can solve that issue by mapping a couple of DPI settings to the Mouse 4 and Mouse 5 buttons.

The Epic Chroma has a 32-bit ARM processor, which means every command you make is delivered at a very fast rate.

Connectivity: Wired or Wireless

The battery lasts approximately 20 hours, and during my tests, it never died in the middle of the game. The more prejudiced among you would attribute that to pure luck, but I am likely to believe the battery life is OK.

When the battery dies, you can plug the USB cable and continue using it. Don’t forget to turn the power switch to an off position, though. Alternatively, you can use the charging dock with the same USB cable. You will see a pulsing light while the mouse is charging. When the battery is fully charged, the indicator will be completely lit up.

As for its performance in wired and wireless mode, I did not notice any significant differences. It scored great in my tests and was as responsive in wireless mode as it was in the wired mode. No lagging whatsoever.

Similar to all Razer-branded gaming mice, the Naga Epic Chroma supports Razer Synapse 2.0 software. Through the customization dashboard, you can program buttons (you cannot program the left click button), link individual profiles to specific games, choose among 16.8 million lighting colors, adjust sensitivity and the polling rate, and record macros. The software is pretty straightforward and intuitive.

When you download and install it, you can automatically receive software updates. It updates a tad too often to my taste; I just tend to cancel the update and start my game. What’s more, the software allows you to customize the interface with popular MMO titles. For the purpose, you have to install software add-ons.

In-game MMO configurator

The in-game MMO configurator allows you to configure the mouse setup without leaving the game. No more “Alt + Tab” combinations required for preparing your gaming tool for a boss fight. And the best is yet to come. World of Warcraft fans will be delighted by the special configurator. It allows you to customize your loadout by dragging the skills onto the overlay and create as many grids as you wish. You are free to adjust the transparency to your liking and make the overlay more prominent or less intrusive. However, keep in mind that for now, the in-game configurator support runs on Windows 7, 8, and 10 only.

Wrap Up: Is It Worth Buying?

The combination of excellent wireless capabilities, plenty of color options and 19 programmable buttons makes the Naga Epic Chroma by Razer a jewel in the crown any MMO fan’s dream setup. If you are looking for a mouse to fit all gaming genres, I advise you to give the Epic Chroma a miss and turn your attention to other Razer-branded peripherals, like the Naga Trinity mouse. Otherwise, the Naga Epic Chroma is, beyond a doubt, the perfect complement to your MMO gaming setup and one of the best MMO mice out there.
