Gaming in style doesn’t need to be discouragingly expensive

Manufacturers smartly exploit monitor market opportunities today. The ‘gaming grade’ label is thrown left, right, and center much to buyers’ frustration and confusion. How deep is your pocket?

If you’re on a big budget, chances are you’ll hit a decent buy. The right choice when on low funds is a different story. A gaming-grade monitor at an affordable price? Is it possible?

The Viotek GN27D curved gaming monitor is a possible solution. Is it brave or crazy to rank it as an affordable gaming grade monitor?

Skeptical as I was, I decided to put this panel to the test to see if Viotek’s is a catchpenny or great buy. Don’t dive in before reading the whole story.

Design and build

For a company that is not as “loud” as the big guns, Viotek has done a great job. The panel is slim at only 24.1 x 9.5 x 17.9 in, weighing just under 10 lbs. I like how it doesn’t take too much space, so there’s more room for whatever knick-knacks you might have.

If you are a gamer who just have to set their display at a precise angle, then the tilt-adjustable stand will serve you well. This monitor also comes in two color options – black and white. That will surely match most battle stations.

The built-in speakers do not offer much. It would be better to stick with your own sound system.

Controls

The monitor controls are at the bottom, marked by printed icons. Before diving right into the controls, this monitor automatically adjusts its setting according to configurations and hardware specs. If you want more adjustments just tweak them using the OSD menu.

Performance

Being suspicious when buying hardware is common. The GN27D proves to be a decent choice. Not the most curved or the best out there but within this price range it is a solid contender in the ‘cost effective curved display’ category.

Though the monitor will pick up your previous settings and hardware specs, prepare to tweak if you are like me – very particular, when it comes to colors. I mean, justice must be served to that awesome ‘modded’ Skyrim armor, right?

The GN27D uses a Samsung VA type display panel. The blacks are deep, and you can play with colors if you fancy that over-saturated look. You can choose to set the RGB range to full or limited. If you choose limited, you’ll see deeper blacks, but I noticed loss in details, so go easy on those.

For AMD users the FreeSync is not on default, so make sure to enable that first. The GN27D also has pre-configured picture modes: Standard, Text, Movie, Game, FPS, RTS.

Final verdict

TheViotek GN27D is a curved monitor for better gaming experience without leaving you destitute. Whether you’re a hardcore gamer or a casual after-hours fighter, your hardware can be a factor in your victorious and pleasant gaming session.

The Samsung VA panel is evident in this monitor, in terms of performance. It might not be the best gaming panel out there, but it performs great and given the price tag it is sitting on, that says a lot.
