I have tested enough gaming headsets to know that cheap (almost) always comes out expensive. That’s why I am happy as a clam whenever I find a peripheral that is neither a rip-off, nor a piece of crap you plan to use until you save up for a better quality one.

After the Sades Spirit Wolf, the next gem I stumbled upon was the Bengoo G9000 gaming headset that works across all platforms and carries a ludicrously low price tag. Now, the most relevant question you can ask is how the Bengoo G9000 compares to Turtle Beach, Razer, Sennheiser, or Bose-branded headsets? Well, it doesn’t. The Bengoo G9000 is an entry model and it is one of the best sub-$30 headsets you can get for your PS4 or Xbox One right now. If you go to Amazon and limit your search to headsets under $30, you will get several pages of devices with difficult to pronounce names and promising specs that look great on paper. In other words, not all budget headsets are created equal. The Bengoo G9000 is an Amazon bestseller, which speaks volumes of its quality, but let’s see what makes it a good fit for your gaming arsenal.

Bengoo G9000 Microphone and Sound Quality

If you expect an immersive 7.1 Dolby Atmos sound, you will be disappointed. However, the Bengoo G9000 sound quality goes above the minimum acceptable to be defined as a good gaming headset for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

It is a stereo headset that uses 40mm neodymium drivers and produces a fair amount of bass. If you are a fan of bass-heavy music genres or you love hearing explosions in shooters loud and clear, you will fall for the punchy bass. If you are not, you may consider it a bit overwhelming at times.

As for the mic, it is omni-directional, and it picks up your voice brilliantly. There is no need to raise your voice to make sure your teammates can hear you. However, this perk is both a blessing and a curse. The mic does ensure the necessary voice clarity, but it turned a bit too sensitive for my liking. The mic picks a lot of ambient noises such as the fan blowing in your room or the car engine humming if your window is open.

Bengoo G9000 Comfort and Build Quality

No matter if you are looking for a budget gaming headset or you are willing to shell out $300 and get the latest and the greatest device, comfort should be your top priority. After all, if you are playing video games, you will wear the headset for hours on end. That’s why you must pick a device that neither crushes your skull nor falls off your head. If you wear glasses, you also have to make sure the headset does not put pressure on your temples.

The Bengoo G9000 comes with well-cushioned ear cups, but if you have a long hair, the weather is hot, and you wear it for several hours, the “sweaty ears” issue seems unavoidable. You will most probably have to clean the earmuffs with a wet wipe when you are done using the headset. The headband is also generously cushioned for maximum comfort. The Bengoo G9000 is a corded headset, and the absence of batteries makes it lightweight. The braided cable itself is long enough (49inches) to ensure freedom of movement.

The G9000 feels surprisingly sturdy for a sub-$30 device. It is an over-ear headset that comes with the basic volume control buttons and blue LEDs (no, you cannot change the color). Keep in mind that if you want to use the headset with an older version of your Xbox One, you will need to purchase a separate adapter.

If you connect the headset to your PC, and you want to hear audio and use the mic at the same time, you will have to use a splitter cable.

Final Verdict

Overall, the Bengoo G9000 exceeded my expectations as far as the audio quality is concerned. It remained crisp across all platforms. If you have a tight budget, and you think you can put up with the above-mentioned setbacks, you will not go wrong with the Bengoo.
