Find the Perfect Mouse to Level up Your Gaming Experience

Ever since I started testing gaming peripherals, I have been wondering if I could come up with a concise definition of the term “best gaming mouse”. As the saying goes: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”. Therefore, I don’t think that there is such a thing as “the best gaming mouse”. However, if you limit your search to a specific set of features, chances are you will find a mouse that suits your playstyle and the genre you prefer.

Instead of making broad generalizations based on brand, I decided to distribute the best gaming mice to categories corresponding to the feature they excel at. I agree that there might be some awesome all-rounders out there, but if you are heavily into MMOs, you must be looking for a mouse with many buttons. Likewise, if you are constantly on the go, you are probably interested in getting a small, premium-quality mouse. Without further ado, let’s explore the strengths and weaknesses of some bestsellers that are worth your while.

Is it a coincidence that I am reviewing the MMO mouse with most buttons a few days after the Battle for Azeroth expansion for World of Warcraft went live? Was it the Hand of Fate?? We have been waiting for the expansion for a while, so if you are struggling to improve your WoW playstyle, assign weapons, controls, and unglue your fingers from the WASD keys, check out the models below.

Corsair Scimitar Pro RGB

Best MMO Mouse with Most Side Buttons

Who is it for: Competitive, button-hungry MMO gamers looking for a premium quality mouse.

The Scimitar Pro RGB is the most vivid example of exquisite craftsmanship Corsair has demonstrated so far. It is among the strong contenders for the “best MMO mouse” title and it does deserve a spot in the “gaming mouse with most buttons” category. The Scimitar Pro RGB has a total of 17 buttons – a 12-button grid, two DPI buttons, a scroll wheel, and right and left clickers. The number pad itself is movable. You can customize it with a screwdriver to make it more comfortable. Although there are mice featuring 22 buttons, the Scimitar is the one with the best quality-price ratio.

The optical sensor allows you to increase the sensitivity to the whopping 16,000 DPI. This is an overkill for 95% of gamers, but the good news is that the Scimitar offers an unprecedented level of dpi customization. Most mice have four or five DPI presets you can cycle through. Unlike them, Scimitar’s sensitivity can be tweaked to a single digit.

The lack of an adjustable weight tuning system is a bummer but if it is of any help, the Scimitar Pro RGB is geared towards MMO/ MOBA players and as such, it is a big, relatively heavy device. If you have small hands, or you are a fingertip gripper, you might want to look elsewhere. However, if you are looking for a genre-specific device to fuel your WoW passion, you will not go wrong with it. For the Horde!

Logitech G600

Runner-up

The G600 is yet another niche model and the overall design and button layout make it suitable primarily for MMOs. It is a great alternative to the Naga, and comes with 20 buttons (you cannot reprogram the right and left clickers, though). If you spend some time fiddling with the Logitech Software settings, the mouse can take over most of the keyboard commands. You can adjust the DPI anywhere in the range between 200 and 8,200 and save your settings in six profiles.

Overall, the G600 is a delight to play with, provided you are used to palm grip, and have a soft spot for MMOs. Although Logitech should have put some extra effort into making the number pad buttons more distinctive, that’s not an issue once you build a good muscle memory.

According to a popular belief, optical sensors are more accurate than laser ones. Well, there is a grain of truth in that statement but actually, the topic is much deeper. In brief, the laser sensors are getting more and more advanced and unless you are competing at a super high level, it is a struggle to see the difference in performance. That being said, the laser sensors are still frowned upon, so I picked the best first-person shooter gaming mouse that will not make you say “Come on, another one bites the dust” a month after the purchase. Needless to say, it has a premium optical sensor inside.

Razer Basilisk

FPS Mouse with the Most Accurate Sensor

Who is it for: Right-handed FPS players, looking for precision and embracing innovative mouse features

If you are a first-person shooter fan, you must have heard of the Razer DeathAdder Elite, praised for its mind-blowing precision. I can’t blame you if you want to play it safe, stop reading, and purchase an Elite right now. However, if you are curious about the other available options, check out what the Basilisk brings to the table.

The Basilisk performs well across all genres, although it is primarily designed for first-person shooters. One of its most distinctive features is the presence of a clutch. Well, the truth is that the clutch is a two-bladed knife. Some gamers I know think that this is a big selling point, and it does a better job than a standard sniper button, others say they would not buy the Basilisk namely because of that clutch. In any case, the clutch makes the Basilisk stand out from the crowd.

Apart from the clutch and the trigger that activates the sniper mode, the Basilisk is a pretty standard mouse. It has right and left clickers, a scroll wheel, two thumb buttons, as well as two buttons beneath the scroll wheel. You can adjust the scroll wheel resistance via the slider on the bottom of the mouse.

Each button is fully programmable via the Razer Synapse 3.0 software. The software enables you to use the so-called HyperShift feature. In brief, you can program a button that enables the HyperShift, then you can map a second command to any of the buttons. The Basilisk is not the first mouse with such a feature, but it is the first model where Razer puts emphasis on it.

As the Basilisk was proclaimed “the gaming mouse with the most precise sensor”, it would be a shame to skip saying a few words about it. The Basilisk employs Razer 5G optical sensor that offers the insane 16,000 DPI, which makes the Basilisk one of the PC gaming mice with the highest native DPI out there. I do not anyone who uses such a bizarre sensitivity level, but I suppose it is better to have a headroom for DPI rather than running out of it. During my tests in Overwatch, Quake, and StarCraft: Remastered, the mouse offered smooth, consistent tracking and no jitter at all. The HyperShift function also came in handy.

Overall, the Basilisk is passable MMO mouse, but both veteran and novice FPS players will find it a joy to use. It is comfortable, versatile, highly customizable, and it is an example of what a good job Razer designers can do when they unlock their imagination and take into account FPS players’ needs.

Razer Basilisk Gaming Mouse: 16,000 DPI Optical Sensor

  • Customizable Chroma RGB Color Profiles: Supports 16.8 million color combinations w/ included preset profiles
  • Quick DPI Toggle for FPS Gaming: A replaceable side button for different hand sizes allows for quick, temporary switching to lower sensitivity settings for instant sniping
  • High-Precision 16,000 DPI Optical Sensor
  • Personalized Scroll Wheel Resistance:

The sniper button is one of those quality of life improvements that can take your gaming to a whole new level. If you are a FPS enthusiast and you prefer your mouse to have a dedicated sniper button, check the suggestions below.

Corsair M65 Pro RGB

Best FPS Mouse with a Sniper Button

Who is it for: FPS players looking for a mouse with a solid build quality and a sniper button for pinpoint accuracy in the chaos of the battle.

I usually shy away from making generalizations, but this time around, I want to declare the M65 Pro as the best FPS gaming mouse. First, it is sensibly priced, second, it is a sturdy Corsair-branded product, third, it has a dedicated sniper button, fourth… I can go on, but I’d better go into detail and explain how the M65 Pro RGB won me over.

The M65 Pro RGB is a wonderful FPS mouse and it was great to see that Corsair has ironed out the kinks its predecessor (the M65) had.

The upper section of the M65 Pro houses two DPI adjustment buttons, click buttons, and a scroll wheel. There is a DPI light indicating the preset you are currently on. The sniper button is located on the left. The forward/ backward buttons are found above the sniper button. All buttons are reprogrammable via the Corsair CUE software.

The sniper button is irreplaceable in first-person shooters, but it is useful not only in gaming, but also in various everyday tasks where precision is required. (picture or video editing, for example).

Unlike its predecessor, the M65 Pro RGB hides an optical sensor under the hood. Optical sensors are considered superior to laser ones in terms of accuracy, but if you are planning to use the mouse on a glass surface, you’d better get an extended mousepad. The sensor itself offers a max DPI of 12,000. The cable is non-removable, but you will find removable weights on the mouse bottom.

The M65 Pro RGB is an affordable, feature-rich FPS gaming mouse that can be competitive to devices that carry a twice as high price tag. If you are striving to eke out more kills in shooters, the M65 Pro is an option to consider. And if you are a Corsair fanboy like me, don’t forget to check out our review about the best Corsair gaming keyboard.

Logitech G402 Hyperion Fury

Runner Up

Unless you have been living under a rock over the last two years, you must have heard of Overwatch, Call of Duty: WWII, and Destiny 2. If you know what Widow’s Kiss means, or you are hooked by a fast-paced shooter where you need insane accuracy for aiming at distant targets, you will totally appreciate the G402 specs.

Design-wise the Hyperion Fury is pretty different from the other peripherals in Logitech lineup but that’s for all the right reasons.

The mouse has a total of eight buttons – the standard right and left clickers, a clickable scroll wheel, two DPI buttons, two thumb buttons, and a sniper button. All of them are reprogrammable via the Logitech software. You can adjust the DPI settings in the range between 240 and 4000. The Hyperion Fury is an irreplaceable weapon for anyone swearing by the precision of the optical sensors and playing demanding titles where accurate mouse movement is critically important. Don’t forget to get a cloth mouse pad, too.

MOBAs are a gaming genre that does not have specific requirements and in most cases, companies opt for mice that do a double duty and perform well in both MMOs and MOBAs. That’s exactly the case with the Razer Naga Trinity –the most customizable gaming mouse Razer has ever released.

Razer Naga Trinity

Best Mouse for MOBAs – Dota 2, LoL, HotS (and MMO too)

Who is it for: WoW diehards, looking for incredibly versatile, yet genre-specific mouse

At a first glance, the Trinity carries a bit steep price tag but in fact, you buy three premium Razer mice for the price of one. The biggest selling point of the Naga Trinity is the three distinctive interchangeable plates that allow you to use it as a Naga Hex V2, the DeathAdder or the original Naga that remains the favorite weapon of avid MMO warriors. No matter if you prefer the Hex V2 for Dota2, the streamlined DeathAdder plate for Overwatch, or you want to assign a whole lot of macros for WoW, the Trinity gets the job done. The MMO plate gives you access to 12 programmable buttons! Overall, the Trinity combines versatility and customization in a splendid manner, so if you often switch between genres, you need a mouse with a high native DPI, and you are sick and tired of using mice that do not give you a competitive in-game advantage, the Trinity is a must-consider device.

Every self-respecting gamer would tell you that wireless mice are not on par with the wired ones. I cannot deny that wireless rodents are often blamed for the lag that is a common reason for a humiliating loss. However, before you condemn all wireless gaming mice as a piece of crap, I would like to bring to your attention the Logitech G903 and explain why its release was a huge step into the right direction.

Logitech G903 Gaming Mouse with Powerplay Wireless Compatibility

Best Logitech Wireless Gaming Mouse

Who is it for: Players looking for a truly wireless gaming experience without lag or jitter.

The first question I would like to give an answer to is what makes the G903 different from the other wireless mice? The G903 is a truly wireless mouse. You don’t need a charging station or a pair of AA batteries. Instead, you can charge it either via a USB or via the Powerplay mousepad. Sometimes this wireless charging feature makes me think we have already arrived at the future.

Later on, Corsair introduced the Qi charging pad and Razer released the HyperFlux bundle, but back then, the Logitech G903 release has taken the wireless gaming segment by storm.

The G903 resembles its Logitech G502 Proteus Spectrum brother that has already proved its capabilities on the FPS scene. At a closer look, however, it offers a whole lot of customization options that would meet the needs of every demanding player.

The G903 is an ambidextrous-design mouse meaning that you can configure the settings and play with your dominant hand. It is suitable for both palm and claw grip. The mouse does not offer any RGB lighting options, but I guess the plethora of lighting patterns is Razer’s territory.

The Logitech device is surprisingly light (110g), and the only wireless mouse that beats the G903 is the HyperFlux Mamba. The trick is that you can use the G903 without the Powerplay, but the wireless Mamba is totally useless without its proprietary charging pad.

Now let’s say a few words about the area where wireless gaming mice usually fall behind their corded siblings – the performance and the consistent movements, in particular.

The G903 is equipped with a PMW3366 optical sensor, known as the best gaming sensor right now, and offers a max DPI of 12,000. It felt responsive, and I had no issues with lagging or jitter. Namely, that’s the reason why it gained a spot in the best wireless mice category.  What’s more, the G903 uses the Lightspeed wireless connectivity meaning you get the stellar 1ms response rate. The intensity of use determines the battery life. According to Logitech, the battery can last up to 32 hours in a single charge although mine died after 24 or so.

The G903 is an absolute proof that the best wireless mice right now are Logitech-branded. I agree that it is a bit expensive, especially when paired with the Powerplay mat, but once you get it, you will not regret the purchase. Money comes as quickly as it goes, the joy of using a quality wireless mouse remains for years.

Logitech G903 LIGHTSPEED Gaming Mouse
  • LIGHTSPEED WIRELESS: latency can be the difference between winning it all or losing. LIGHTSPEED wireless technology features a 1 ms report rate for competition level twitch targeting

  • CUSTOMIZABLE DESIGN: configurable button layout and ambidextrous design allow for left or right handed use that works with nearly any mouse grip style, including palm, claw and fingertip grips

Anker Ergonomic Optical USB Wired Vertical Mouse

Best Mouse for Wrist Pain and Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Who is it for: People who spend most of the time using a computer mouse; People suffering from a wrist pain

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a serious condition and it does not affect only gamers. Everyone whose job requires them to use a computer several hours a day is at risk of experiencing wrist tension and pain. If you spend 8 hours per day at the office, and then you get back home for a several-hour gaming marathon, the pressure you put on your hand, takes its toll. As the time passes, the pain intensifies and Advil no longer helps.

The truth is that there is no “gaming” mouse designed especially for carpal tunnel syndrome prevention or wrist pain alleviation, but it is a good idea to get an ergonomic mouse. The lack of a vertical gaming mouse is a bit baffling but that’s probably because it takes a bit of a learning curve to get used to one. In case its capabilities turn inadequate during a heated battle, you can at least use it when you perform your everyday tasks.

Razer Atheris Bluetooth Gaming Mouse

Best Gaming Mouse for Laptop

Who is it for: Gamers who travel a lot; People who want an unobtrusive mouse for gaming and business

If you are looking for a gaming mouse for a laptop, chances are you need a highly portable, accurate, wireless device you can easily carry around. The Razer Atheris is the perfect mouse to use at the hotel room, during a flight, office presentation, etc.

As a travel mouse, the Atheris lacks the advanced features of its counterparts. It has 5 buttons (right and left clickers, a DPI button, a scroll wheel and two thumb buttons) that can be independently programmed and tips the scales at 66g (without the two AA batteries). As for the battery life, Razer promises 350 hours of service, which means the batteries can get you through almost one month of use before they are due for replacement.

The max sensitivity is 7,200; the Atheris offers on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment.

You can connect the mouse to your laptop via Bluetooth or a USB dongle. Some gamers experience disconnections when they opt for the Bluetooth connectivity. If you fear disconnection at the most inappropriate moment, you’d better go for the dongle.

The Atheris is customizable via the Razer Synapse 3.0 software and despite some minor software flaws, it works admirably. It is a no-frills device but if quality, portability, and affordability are your main concerns, it is the best solution you can find right now.

9.4
Razer Atheris Ambidextrous Wireless Mouse
  • High-Precision 7200 DPI Optical Sensor: Offers on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment and 1000 Hz ultrapolling in a compact and mobile form-factor
  • 350 Hour Battery Life: Supports wireless, extended gaming sessions using swappable 2x AA batteries (included)
  • 2. 4 Ghz Wireless & Bluetooth Low-Energy Connectivity Options: Adaptive Frequency Technology switches frequencies upon detecting interference, allowing for lag-free data transmission and stable connections
  • Ridged, Rubberized Scroll Wheel for Maximum Accuracy: Small, tactile bumps increases grip and allows for more controlled scrolling in high-stakes gaming situations
  • 5 Programmable Buttons: Allows for button remapping and assignment of complex macro functions through Razer Synapse 3

Sad as it may seem, left-handed gaming mice are few and far between. Back in the days, Razer released a left-handed Naga but if you find a brand new one anywhere, you should buy a lottery ticket that same day. Southpaws hope for a left-handed Naga Trinity, although Razer representatives said that it is not just “let’s flip over the number pad” matter, so it will take some time until that idea becomes a reality. Until then, lefties will have to settle for ambidextrous mice, that are not such a rarity, to say the least.

SteelSeries Sensei 310

Best Ambidextrous Gaming Mouse

Who is it for: Right- and left-handed players looking for an ergonomic mouse that performs admirably across all genres and does not cost a small fortune

I need to be honest with you guys, my favorite SteelSeries mouse is SteelSeries Rival 600, but it is a right-handed one. Still, anyone who has put their hands on a SteelSeries mouse or headset in the last two years, would not question their quality.

The Sensei 310 has an ambi shape, it is also remarkably lightweight, and performs well across all genres. It is pretty similar to the Rival 310 – it has the same TrueMove3 optical sensor and allows you to increase the sensitivity to 12,000 DPI. The sensor provides one-to-one tracking. It is based on the PixArt 3360, which speaks volumes of its accuracy. The Omron switches add to Sensei’s durability.

The lightweight design makes it suitable for shooters, but if you are looking for a heavier mouse for MOBAs, you will be disappointed as the Sensei does not have a weight tuning system. To cut a long story short, if you are looking for a comfortable, functional, intuitive mouse for lefties the SteelSeries Sensei 310 is a top pick.

9.4
SteelSeries Sensei 310 Gaming Mouse
  • Custom TrueMove3 12,000 CPI, 350 IPS optical 1-to-1 tracking esports sensor
  • Legendary SteelSeries Sensei ambidextrous design for claw and palm grip styles
  • Two-zone, multi-color Prism RGB illumination for customizable lighting. Save all your performance and lighting settings directly to the Sensei 310
  • Compatible operating system is windows, mac, and linux. Usb port required. Software is steelseries engine 3.10.12 plus, for windows 7 or newer and mac osx 10.8 or newer

Some gaming mice come with a weight tuning system, others have removable parts, but those that offer a plethora of physical adjustment options are still a rarity. Apart from the above-mentioned Naga Trinity, there is yet another model that pretends to tick all the right boxes in terms of customization. Does it succeed in being many things to many people? Let’s see.

Roccat Nyth

Most Customizable Gaming Mouse

Who is it for: – Mainly MMO/MOBA players looking for a robust number of buttons and a myriad of customization options

The Roccat Nyth is among the few gaming peripherals that allow you to “build your victory”.  The mouse ships with 12 contoured thumb buttons, 12 default thumb buttons, six larger thumb buttons, two types of grips, and three strips that deactivate the buttons.

Apart from the scroll wheel, and the right and left clickers, the Nyth also has a 12-key numpad, and EasyShift+ button, and a paddle that clicks right and left. If you are wondering what’s the purpose of the paddle, all I can tell you is that it is really convenient in shooters when you look around the corners. As for the EasyShift+, it allows you to reprogram the buttons and have access to a greater number of commands at your fingertips. Mouse buttons are customizable via the Roccat Swarm software.

Now, you must be wondering if you will need a day off whenever you decide to swap between the removable parts. Worry no more because it does not get any simpler. If you want to change the grip, you need to pull the current one out. If you want to replace the buttons, you have to find the button located on the mouse bottom and slide it.

The Nyth has a laser sensor and a max DPI of 12,000.

Ultimately, the Nyth was a pilot experiment and from today’s perspective, I cannot say how successful it was. My most honest opinion is that the Nyth receives less attention than it deserves, but I guess the sheer number of customization options is too much for most players. Still, if you are willing to embrace the idea of using the most customizable mouse ever and you turn a blind eye to the software pitfalls, the Nyth will not disappoint.

9.4
ROCCAT ROC-11-900-AM Nyth - Build Your Victory, Black

  • Hotswappable Side Grips for a superior ergonomic and customizable grip for small and big hands
  • Keep on top and in full control of the Nyth and other Roccat products with gaming ecosystem Swarm, allowing for unprecedented product customization

How to Choose a Good Gaming Mouse?

As we have made it clear, the “best gaming mouse” is slated for a release in the remote future. For now, we have gaming mice that outshine their competitors in certain areas and meet genre-specific requirements better than their rivals do. There is no straight answer which are the features a good gaming mouse should possess, but there are some pretty accurate guidelines that will help you pick a gaming mouse that is best for you. Not the best for your teammate, not the best for your roommate, not the best for your sibling, but for you.

  • Type of Grip – Are you a palm, claw or fingertip gripper?
  • Gaming genre – Depending on the genre you prefer, you will have to look for certain must-have features. MOBA fans need a moderate number of buttons and a durable mouse capable of withstanding millions of clicks. FPS players have to take into account the sensor, the pinpoint accuracy and the mouse weight to be able to do all that strafing, running, and gunning in a breeze. Likewise, MMO fans need a whole lot of buttons for assigning macros. Last but not least, you should not underestimate the mouse shape and ergonomics.
  • Sensor – For now, optical sensors are known as slightly more accurate than the laser ones
  • Wired or Wireless Gaming Mouse? – Although wireless technologies are rapidly advancing, gamers still have a soft spot for corded gaming mice that eliminate the risk of lag and interference. Still, if you are sick and tired of the cables scattered around your desk, the above-mentioned Logitech G903 is a brilliant wireless performer.
  • Level of customization – Most gaming mice come with a proprietary software that allows you to adjust the sensitivity, lighting, assign macros, disable buttons, etc. Speaking of physical customization, vendors rarely go beyond the weight tuning system (the Naga Trinity and the Roccat Nyth are among the few exceptions)
  • Price – Although the term “high-end gaming mouse” is a big vague, I will not surprise anyone if I say that premium gaming mice are expensive. My personal notion of a high-end gaming mouse is the Asus ROG Spatha, but if you think that the Razer Naga Epic Chroma is the best gaming mouse on Earth who am I to fight you on this? You can find a good gaming mouse for around $50. Anything under $50 would be a huge compromise. However, if you go for a budget pick, you will have to decide which features you will be able to manage without. The price of the most advanced gaming mice usually gravitates around $200 although the $80-$100 price range is the sweet spot between affordability and top quality.
