Due to the recent natural disasters that have hit North America and Asia, Blizzard decided to release its annual charity pet ahead of the BlizzCon event that kicks off on November 3. That is what the video game developer announced in a blog post available on World of Warcraft site.
The new pet, Shadow the Fox, looks like a big-eared Fox. As its name implies, it has a color-changing coat. It can also take part in the WoW pet battles. Every player can adopt it by paying a $10 adoption fee. All funds generated until December 31, 2017, will be split between the American Red Cross Disaster Relief and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Disaster Relief Fund. The donations will be used for helping people affected by the hurricanes Irma and Harvey, and the flooding in South Asia.
Players have four months to contribute to the charitable cause and it seems the World of Warcraft will once again make the real world a better place.
This is not the first time the World of Warcraft raises money for charity by selling a pet, though. Last year, Blizzard put up the Mischief the Fel Kitty on sale and raised $2.5 million to support the Make-A-Wish. In 2015, the video game publisher helped the Red Cross deal with the consequences of the Ebola outbreak by raising $1.9 million by the sale of Argi the Spacegoat. In 2014, Blizzard donated $1 million to Make-A-Wish by selling the Alterac Brew-Pup pet.
Last year, Blizzard also donated all funds generated via the purchases of Hearthstone’s Khadgar, to World Wildlife Fund. The publisher has also raised some money via Heroes of the Storm streaming initiatives.
