PS3 Servers Close Doors

After 10 years of operation, Naughty Dog has announced that the company will be shutting down multiplayer servers for their PlayStation 3 games. By the announcement made on their developer blog and Twitter, they confirmed that servers for Uncharted, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, The Last of Us, and The Last of Us: Left Behind will forever close doors.

On the blog, Naughty Dog showed appreciation to its solid fanbase and thanked all of the players who have stayed with them for this long.

“Thank you to everyone who has played Uncharted and The Last of Us multiplayer on PS3 and for all of your incredible enthusiasm, feedback, and support”, they wrote

One Last Time

However, the shutdown isn’t going to be immediate, as the servers won’t go down until September 3rd, 2019. Fans will still have till Labor Day weekend to plug in their PS3 and enjoy its final moments. Naughty Dog also said that starting today all multiplayer DLC for these games will also be free until the shutdown.

We can’t help but think that this is not a surprising move from Naughty Dog for various reasons. First of all, with the PS5 generation nearing its entry, it makes sense for these long-running PS3 servers that are still alive to bid their final goodbyes. The good news is, instead of getting an abrupt support cut-off, players are getting a fair amount of warning before the actual shutdown.

New Hype

Fans should not be sad, though. With old doors closing, new ones are about to open. Despite Sony skipping this year’s E3, Naughty Dog is still working hard on the highly anticipated Last of Us: 2 productions.
