PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is among the games that regularly receive updates, new modes, weapons, and fixes. However, the announcement about the upcoming implementation of a new microtransaction-based loot crate system has raised a storm of controversy.
The reason for the massive outcry was the fact that players will have to spend real money for unlocking the items. That s why PUBG’s creator, Brendan Greene, took a stance on the matter in an attempt to allay players’ fears.
PUBG has its debut on Steam in March, as an Early Access game. While the regular addition of fresh content was well accepted by players, most of them did not expect the introduction of microtransactions before the game leaves EA. When the new crate and key system was announced last week, players were not entirely amused.
Mr Greene released a statement and said that the microtransaction system would be fully implemented upon PUBG’s actual release. However, developers needed to test the system prior to its launch and make sure it was ready to be introduced to the PUBG community. He also emphasized that the microtransactions were optional and players do not necessarily have to spend real money.
Nevertheless, Greene seems to have failed to deal with players’ unrest. The PUBG is already quite a popular game. Consequently, the availability of a microtransaction system would result in substantial revenue even before PUBG’s full release, as many players will want to start customizing their character right away. Players also raised their concerns that the revenue generated during the Early Access may put off game’s release until a later date.
According to people with knowledge of the matter, the microtransaction system inclusion while the PUBG is in Early Access would not harm the game. The system is “purely optional” and those who opt in and opt out will remain on an even footing. On the other hand, players impatient to start customizing their character will get the chance to do that.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is now available for PC in Early Access. Its console release is expected by the end of the year.
