New Game in Town

A new tactical RPG is in town, as Solasta: Crown of the Magister was announced today. The developer, Tactical Adventures, a Paris-based firm that was launched in 2018 by Amplitude Studios co-founder Mathieu Girard.

On the development diary, Girard said that it aims “to bring the true tabletop roleplaying experience to videogames”. The debut diary also contains a sneak peek of the game such as pre-alpha gameplay footage.

Of Dungeons and Dragons

Solasta seems heavily influenced and inspired by Dungeons & Dragons, which Girard had pointed out in the video. Players will have to create a party of four adventurers of races and classes to start. Upon completing your party, you must guide them through different realms, while on a quest for treasures and adventures.

However, its most interesting part is its verticality. Unlike other games that utilize ‘a series of flat maps’, Solasta’s game world is three-dimensional.

This style will add depth to combat and will allow players to explore “by climbing walls, flying, teleporting, crawling through tunnels, finding secret passages, or falling through unstable ground”, Girard quoted.

“Additionally, we have added new features such as light, verticality, team-based adventure, dice rolls, etc.”, Girard continued. “We are using the actual rulesets from tabletop games to finally bridge the gap between pen and paper and videogames”, he added.

New Breed of RPG?

With all due respect to the developer team, this is not a unique idea. Tactical Adventures is not the first studio to take inspiration from the classic D&D. BioWare already did it, with Baldur’s Gate.

Solasta is still in its early stages of development and with no original idea behind it. Nevertheless, the possibility of having a worthwhile tabletop RPG experience on PC has tons of players eager to try it out. Though it is still early to judge the game, we can’t deny that these developments are worth looking into.

If you want to be a part of the game, it is reported that a Kickstarter to support Solasta is coming soon. The developers also announced that there will be a demo. However, there is no explanation as to whether it will be released as part of the crowdfunding campaign or at a later date. If you are itching to know more, you can find out details about the game on its official website, solasta-game.com.
