Delay in Release

Developer and creator Derek Yu of Mossmouth has announced a delay in the release of the much-awaited Spelunky 2. He took it to Twitter and said that he “don’t think we’re going to release Spelunky 2 this year”. In his words the “density and detail of the game is demanding more time.”

Yu explained the decision further on his tweet, saying “development is still going well and we’re not far off-target”. It seems that developers of Spelunky 2 need longer time to live up to the well-loved original.

Further Improvements

He also apologized for the lack of updates. He further explained that “it can be tough balancing communication and dev time (and not spoiling too much).” However, it appears that the team is working hard to bring the production to an end and deliver amazing results.

Yu also confirmed that the teams at Mossmouth and Blitworks have “been adding more detail as well as increasing the contrast to make existing details pop.” These updates and improvements were based on player feedback.

Waiting Game

No new date of release was announced, and he did not give any estimated time either. He promised that the actual release date will be revealed as soon as it’s ready. He also added more hype around the game as he teased ‘crazy stuff’ on his tweet.

Though it’s still technically possible for Spelunky 2 to be out this year, especially when Yu didn’t explicitly say that it won’t be, don’t keep your hopes up because it sure doesn’t sound like it’s going to happen. Fans can safely assume that it will be released sometime in 2020.

Spelunky 2 was announced at Paris Games Week last 2017. The following year, the developer aimed for a 2019 release date for PlayStation 4 and Windows PC via Steam.
